Description: Zulu-land or Life Amongst the Zulu-Kafirs of Natal and Zulu-land, South Africa.. by Rev. Lewis Grout (1815-1905) a Yale graduate and missionary Congregationalist minister who spent 15 years at a remote missionary station in the Zulu country of South Africa. "AS IS" Worn/ fragile antique. This book is a rare missionary relic that appears well traveled. The book is missing the front free pages and title page, and the first page present is the content page. Research and attributes date the book either 1863 or 1864, depending on whether it's the English or American first edition. Book has heavy wear. Boards are rubbed, scuffed, & the cloth is peeling at edges and corners. The spine cloth is also torn and peeling. The boards have been crudely repaired with stitching to spine seams. There is an antique CT Church bookplate to front inner board. There is some writing to the inner boards & to the beginning content pages and to a few text pages, 3/4's of the fold-out map at the beginning of the book is missing, the six illustrations/ plates that are called for are present. Binding is cracked in several places and pages are loosening at binding thread. Many pages with splitting seams, folded corners, rough edges, & a few tears. Foxing/ staining throughout. Loss of rear free page. One of the illus. is detached and is laid into place. Definitely an interesting piece of American Missionary history that appears to have survived ZULU-LAND. 351 pp. ENJOY "as Is". SEE pics!
