Description: This beast was reportedly made to film nuclear tests, and has the kind of heavy-duty construction one would expect. I picked it up a decade ago with an astrophotography project in mind, as these are much sought-after in that community, but it has never made it off the shelf. It is time for it to find a new home. This has triple-fold mirror optics, shortening the 40-inch optical path to 13.6 inches (plus the turret and hood... overall length is 24"). The bails around the outside are mounts for a solar heat shield, and there is a control that selects from the four neutral density filter options in a turret: 12.5% 25% 50% 100% (This serious ND range is excellent for solar photography applications) The nearby knob is for continuous focusing, with a lock. There is also a side-mounted tube of desiccant. The catadioptric mirror system is designed to get rid of chromatic aberration (no special focusing for infrared)... these are famous for being free from astigmatism, coma, or distortion. Surfaces are treated with their proprietary hard anti-reflective coating called WOCOTE, reducing internal reflection and flare. I believe this was built in the early 1960s, and the folded optical path is amazing. I don't know the details of the camera adapter... you can see in the photo that it is 1.25" internal diameter, but I have never attempted to interface it to anything, and I am not the first owner. The telescope weighs 24.8 pounds, and I'm estimating 5 additional pounds for double-boxing and padding. Ground USPS shipment in the US should run somewhere between $50 and $130 depending on distance from the Pacific Northwest. There are no accessories or other parts included, but I will print a hardcopy of the 6-page technical brochure from 3M.
