Description: Rare Antique Broad Axe Head Witte Hardware Embossed Large IXL Logo Mid-1800'sDescription Here for your consideration is this fabulous rare antique Witte Hardware of St. Louis, Missouri broad axe with a large embossed "IXL" logo. After my research on this company (Witte-Hardware Co.), I found that the company was founded in 1849. I am sure this is one of the earliest examples of the axes that they produced. (circa 1850-1875) It is in great condition with a clean crisp embossed logo that measures 2 3/8" x 2 3/8". The logo clearly reads, "Witte Hardware Co", "St Louis. USA" "IXL Trade Mark". It has "Witte" going both directions inside of the X. The cutting edge measures 12 inches long. I can see no sign of it ever being sharpened or ground on. In fact it no sign of being used. It does have some rust and light pitting primarily in the main body area. The flat end measures 3 1/2" x 7/8" and there is no mushrooming at all. The weight of the axe head is 6 lb 9 1/2 ounces.
