Description: Presenting an exceptional vintage Maori Maripi Patu masterfully hand carved from one solid piece of Native timber. The club-like body is intricately carved with a pierced design and decorated to both faces with traditional swirling motifs intended to confuse the enemy. Discs of inlaid Paua shell add a dazzling detail. While this piece looks very much like a fierce and imposing Patu (and would compliment a collection of such) it was infact traditionally a cutting implement called a Maripi and not a weapon. Traditionally shark teeth were bound with fibre to the curved edge. This exceptional example perfectly exhibits the use of the bound shark teeth by using faux shark teeth to complete the form, wonderfully exhibiting the traditional technique and creating a striking display piece.
