The men were not particularly heroic, nor were their officers particularly brilliant. The troopers were generally drawn from the castaways, rejects, and drifters of society, who could not find other means of employment. The officers were of a higher caste, but had a great deal of "civilized" warfare to unlearn before they could lead troops effectively against the unorthodox tactics of their enemy.
