Overall still in great shape and unread, Spine is super tight and new.(please see photos of the actual item you will be receiving) What do expert drummers do? Why do they do it? Is there anything creative about it? If so, how might that creativity inform their practice and that of others in related artistic spheres? Applying ideas from cultural psychology to findings from research into the creative behaviors of a specific subset of popular music instrumentalists, Bill Bruford demonstrates the ways in which expert drummers experience creativity in performance and offers fresh insights into in-the-moment interactional processes in music. An expert practitioner himself, Dr. Bruford draws on a cohort of internationally renowned, peak-career professionals and his own experience to guide the reader through the many dimensions of creativity in drummer performance. Bill Bruford took up music and drumming at the age of 12. By age 27, his musical character had already been forged in the fiery furnace of four of the biggest progressive rock groups of the day; Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, and UK. Early success propelled Bill, by nature a restless innovator uncomfortable with the well-worn path, into a long and fruitful career as a bandleader and writer. Groups such as Bruford and Earthworks led the way with advanced harmony in electric rock in the 1970s & 80s; samples, electronics, and odd-metres in electric jazz in the 90s; and stylistic innovation with strong compositional identity in his current 21st century acoustic jazz. His taste for the unpredictable in live performance has led him to collaborations with countless of the world’s top rock and jazz musicians, in an endless search for the innovative, the unusual, and the unlikely. For forty years after his beginnings in progressive rock, Bruford remained a vital force in all things percussive. His life’s work is well documented on CD and DVD at Summerfold and Winterfold Records, in his book ‘Bill Bruford: The Autobiography’ (2009), and at www.billbruford.com. Dr. Bruford retired from public performance in 2009 and was awarded his PhD from the University of Surrey for his work in the area of drummers and creative music performance in April 2016. he was inducted into the rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes in 2017, and his current volume 'Uncharted: Creativity and the Expert Drummer' was published by the University of Michigan Press in early 2018. 5.0 out of 5 stars immensely satisfyinglet's not pretend; this is not what we might refer to as 'light reading'. but at last, after all the drummer jokes i've suffered throughout my percussive 'career' (such as it is/was), it's a delight to read a book that treats the act of drumming and its practitioners as intellectuals, musically on a level footing with the other guys in the band.'uncharted' is the more acceptable face of dr bruford's phd thesis, concerning the creativity practiced by those who play at the non-pitched end of the percussive spectrum. to be uncharacteristically brief, it is an immensely satisfying read from both an informative and literary point of view, featuring testimony from a number of expert drummers, including mark guiliana, pete erskine, chad wackerman, dylan howe and others.every bit as technical as the author's drumming, but equally, every bit as enjoyable and influential.
