Trans World Airways (TWA) First Flight New York Airport - Freeport Bahamas 1985

Description: In the spring of 1985 Trans World Airways announced that it would inaugurate service in mid-November to nine new Caribbean points from its New York and St. Louis hubs. In July the airline decided to postpone service indefinitely to any points except Freeport, Nassau and San Juan. “The continuing unresolved problems of high operating costs” were cited as the reason. The six destinations dropped were St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. Maarten, Antigua, Martinique and Guadeloupe. New York dispatched covers to Nassau on the November 15, 1985 inaugural L-1011 flight which operated nonstop to Freeport and then continued to Nassau. This cover was carried on the inaugural TWA flight from the John F Kennedy Airport Mail Facility in New York to Freeport, Bahamas (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as TW-F95f.
