Description: This is a Vintage 1995 TOWER RECORDS Sunset Blvd POSTCARD featuring the Original MERCURY SEVEN ASTRONAUTS Tower Records is an international retail franchise and online music store that was formerly based in Sacramento, California, United States. From 1960 until 2006, Tower operated retail stores in the United States, which closed when Tower Records filed for bankruptcy and liquidation. Tower Records was purchased by a separate entity and was not affected by the retail store closings. The history of Supreme’s occupation of the site has caused consternation for residents. For years, the location was the most recognizable Tower Records store, but the business shuttered in 2006. The “Tower Records” signage was actually removed then, but was recreated for the 2015 documentary “All Things Must Pass,” which explored the history of the music haven. There were efforts by Supreme to keep the signage intact, but the company could not reach an agreement with the Tower Records intellectual property holder, still listed as Tower Records. The 8500 square foot space sees Supreme’s first fully free floating skate bowldesigned by Steven Badgett’s Simparch alongside art installations by new and longtime collaborators. The Mercury Seven were the group of seven astronauts selected to fly spacecraft for Project Mercury. They are also referred to as the Original Seven and Astronaut Group 1. Their names were publicly announced by NASA on April 9, 1959: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. The Mercury Seven created a new profession in the United States, and established the image of the American astronaut for decades to come.
