Description: Thomas Jefferson and His World is one of many volumes in the American Heritage Junior Library. This volume focuses on the numerous achievements of this remarkable American. Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, served as governor of Virginia, designed Monticello, and served as Secretary of State for George Washington. As our third president, Jefferson doubled the size of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase and sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark out to explore it. Finally, Jefferson established the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The book also describes the many other achievements of Thomas Jefferson including his role as an inventor, naturalist, scientist, agrarian, intellectual, and humanitarian. This book does a good job of explaining the disagreements between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton and the subsequent development of political parties. The background to the diplomacy of the Louisiana Purchase is also clearly delineated. Additionally, while not directly involved in the making of the Monroe Doctrine, Jefferson did provide advice on it to President James Monroe. Finally, the Library of Congress was born as a result of Jefferson's offer to Congress of his 10,000 volumes on history, zoology, medicine, agriculture, chemistry, physics, astronomy, mathematics, religion, law, politics, and philosophy. There are, of course, many other achievements to be credited to Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson and His World is an ideal book for middle and high school students. The concise and clearly written narrative is supplemented with many paintings, prints, and drawings of the period. In short, this book is a great introduction to one of the most accomplished Americans in United States history. This book is part of a large collection from the estate of an avid collector. This book has been carefully stored.
