Description: THE PROSE WORKS OF JOHN MILTON; WITH AN INTRODUCTORY REVIEW, BY ROBERT FLETCHER. London: Westley and Davis, Stationers' Court, 1836. Large hardcover, 963 pages (plus an unpaginated index). Good- condition only. Soiling, rubbing and staining to the boards. Heavy bumping to the head, tail, corners and board edges. The corners are frayed and chipped. Soiling and age-toning to the text block edges. There are various degrees of dust-soiling, foxing and age-toning to the pages. The heaviest soiling and foxing comes on the front endpaper/frontispiece, tissue guard, title page and last few pages. The tissue guard has some tears and rippling along the inner edge. There is some edge-wear to the pages, including several pages with corner creases. There is a general waviness to the pages. The binding is close to cracking in the front hinge, and some of the early pages have a loose feel, but the overall binding still feels firm. A few pages are unopened (uncut) along the top edge. Chipping or peeling has revealed red cloth beneath the surface, mostly along the joints of the spine (this may be a rebound copy). All pages appear to be present. The frontispiece portrait of Milton is the only illustration. A scarce edition from this publisher.
