DESCRIPTION Mauthausen camp was designed with the intention of working inmates to death and it succeeded – it is estimated that between 120,000 and 320,000 people died there between 1938 and 1945. Without a “second’s rest” in brutal 12-hour shifts, prisoners at the camp were forced to carry 50kg granite blocks up 186 steps that were carved into the face of the quarry. The 186 steps became infamously known as the “Stairs of Death”. From these stairs author and Holocaust survivor Christian Bernadac got the name for his book, in which he describes the extreme conditions the prisoners endured.
