His recollections and opinions were first published in 1856. To quote from the introduction, "A Mail Bag is an epitome of human life. The book is a richly detailed collection that Agent Holbrook collected as an agent of the Post Office. The anecdotes are interesting and the language is in the 19th century style of elegant turns of phrase, classical and literary allusions and a tone sometimes reminiscent of mark Twain. With amusing illustrations, this book is a first hand account of early 19th century America from the stand point of the mail service in an expanding nation.
