The editor, Vincent Starrett (1886 – 1974), culled the contents of Et Cetera mostly from newspaper and magazine excerpts that he had saved and collected in "many scrap books and not a few closets." Starrett regarded these pieces as "lost or forgotten" because they had never been anthologized or reprinted in a book. Some of the items were, in Starrett's opinion, "uncollected masterpieces." The authors represented in Et Cetera include Stephen Crane, Lord Dunsany, Lafcadio Hearn, John O'Hara, Rudyard Kipling, George Moore, and Walt Whitman. Starrett was a Canadian-born American writer, newspaperman, and bibliophile. His eclectic output included Sherlock Holmes sequels, other detective stories (The Case Book of Jimmie Lavender), and horror/fantasy stories published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales. Starrett's influential weekly column "Books Alive" ran in the Chicago Tribune for 25 years. He also wrote Best Loved Books of the 20th Century, a collection of 52 essays discussing popular works, published in 1955. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
