Description: Early Staffordshire Child's ABC Alphabet Plate KANGAROO and BABY JOEY~ Wild Animals Series Brownhills Pottery Co. Staffordshire England 1880 This whimsical children's transferware ABC or alphabet plate dates to 1880. It measures 6-1/2 inches across. Transfer printed in chocolate brown decorated with polychrome clobbering in brown and green depicting a kangaroo with a joey in her pouch and another feeding nearby in a naturalistic setting, with a banner between kangaroo and the alphabet in the distinctive Brownhills signature asymmetrical Aesthetic design. The plate is marked with a registration diamond and the maker's backstamp of the Brownhills Pottery Co in the Staffordshire region of England c1880. The images were originally found as copperplate engravings and woodcuts in an early childrens book of natural history. Kangaroos and their young are ever popular, and this sentimental image celebrates their importance of their presence on the planet. Mugs and plates like this were made as gifts for good children and rewards of merit, used to aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their imaginations in the 19th century. The plate is in great condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Light overall crazing and minor discoloration consistent with age, and manufacturing imperfections typical of the period, including stilt marks, stray paint under the glaze, all original to the making and adding to the unique charm of these early children's wares. It is amazing that this plate was made for a child so long ago! Sold as is. The images are delightful, a throwback to a much simpler time.
