The three albums immediately prior to the first album featured here, Future Games' - namely, the endlessly inventive, multi-faceted and absorbing double collection, Spirit Of ‘76’, its charming lesser sibling Son Of Spirit', and the partial reformation of the original line-up that was the brilliant ‘Farther Along' had all highlighted the resurgence of de facto leader Randy California as a singular, idiosyncratic writer, musician and performer. Although none of the albums mentioned above made great inroads in terms of sales, for long-term fans of the band and recent converts alike, the construction of a remarkable body of work was both reassuring and refreshing. However, with ‘Future Games - pretty much a Randy California solo work, a new benchmark was reached in terms of inventiveness, the further fleshing out of California’s personal vision illustrating that in the late 70s - a whole decade after the first flowering of California's talent in the original Spirit line-up - the man was far from being a burnt-out relic of the first Psychedelic era.
