A very attractive and well-made piece of typical Soviet quality of the period. The Excellent Signalman badge was one of several badges of the so-called railway proficiency series. These badges were introduced during the war, in 1942 and were essentially medals for outstanding performance, often under enemy fire. They were hard to earn and their recipients would have various privileges for life! The Signalman badge is by far the rarest of the badges of this series. The badge is in good condition, especially for the scarce Signalman badge! The enamel on the banner is chipped on two small segments of the banner on the right, but is completely intact on the larger portion of the banner and shows a very attractive luster. The enamel on the horizontal plaque with the inscription “Signalman” is practically perfect, having only some tiny hairlines invisible to the naked eye, no flaking or chips. The white enamel as well as the red enamel on the Signals insignia in the center is perfect. All the enamel on this piece is 100% ORIGINAL: there are no enamel repairs. Raised details of the artwork are perfect and crisp. The screw post is original, of full length (nearly 12.5 mm) and has not been repaired. The badge includes the original screw plate maker-marked “ShMZ-D MPS” (Narkomat of Railroad Transportation, Mechanical Stamping Factory"). This interesting and uncommon Soviet award can be an equally nice addition to either a Russian medal collection or railroad memorabilia collection.
