Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Souvenir replicating the spade used by President William Taft in 1913 for the ground breaking for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition at San Francisco. These "spade" souvenirs were made by the Shreve Jewelry Co. of the City, and sold prior to as well as during the event. This example is fashioned with a pin backing, with 85mm+ long pin (overall length of the piece is 100mm+). Professional jeweler mount used so I suspect that this is as-made by Shreve. As stout as the pin itself is, this suggest that this was meant as a hat pin or similar, as it would have damaged clothing too badly to be worn on the chest. Not to mention possibly damaging the wearer! Signed and hallmarked by Shreve as shown. These "spades" were made in different finishes - those I know of are bright Silver, Antiqued Silver and Gold vermeil (wash or plate) to replicate the actual Gold shovel used by Taft. They were originally sold in a small paper envelope describing the object, which are scarce today both due to being tossed by the original purchaser, as well as the inevitable damage over the past Century. I suspect that these pin versions were sold sans envelope, most likely direct at Shreve's retail locations. I consider this version to be much scarcer than the typical "spade" souvenir. Mounting pin shows slight bending and minor wear to the surface, so this was obviously worn as intended. Out of an old and important PPIE collection.
