Description: Sonia Delaunay was born in Gradshik, Ukraine in 1885. Sara Ilinitchna Stern, known as Sonia Stern, was adopted in 1890 by her uncle Henri Terk, a cultured lawyer from Saint Petersburg and a collector of paintings who would awaken the young Sonia to art. She attended the Atelier Schmidt-Reuter in Karlsruhe from 1903 to 1904, then the Acadmie de la Palette in Paris where she settled in 1905. She then painted portraits and Fauvist nudes. Her first solo exhibition was organized in 1908. After a first marriage, she married the painter Robert Delaunay in 1910, whom she considered a poet expressing himself with colors. She followed her husband on the paths of abstraction. From 1913 to 1935, Sonia Delaunay devoted herself mainly to the applied arts (cushions, vests, dresses, lampshades, etc.) in the same way. She also made bookbindings, covers and illustrations for books. She opened a decoration boutique ("Casa Sonia"), then created, with the couturier Jacques Heim, the "Boutique Simultanee" for the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts (Paris, 1925). The artist became a specialist in the art of clothing and the influence of painting on it. In the 1930s, the couple joined the Abstraction-Cration group, which advocated non-figurative art. From 1935 to 1937, she returned to painting, notably creating wall panels. The Delaunays actively participated in the great collective adventure of art in the street, encouraged by the Popular Front. Robert Delaunay died in 1941, and Sonia retired to Grasse until the end of the war. In 1946, she co-founded the Salon des Ralits Nouvelles and exhibited with the Art Concret group. Sonia Delaunay was also at the origin of the Espace group. Always faithful to pure color, exalted by the law of simultaneous contrasts, she created series, designed mosaics, stained glass windows, carpets and tapestries, made sets and costumes for the theater, illustrated books. If the careers of Robert and Sonia Delaunay are inseparable, their respective works bear the mark of their personalities. Sonia Delaunay died in Paris in 1979.
