Empress Zoë Porphyrogenita chose Constantine IX as a husband and co-emperor in 1042 CE, despite him conspiring against her previous husband, Emperor Michael IV the Paphlagonian (saucy!). As emperor, Constantine IX waged wars against the Kievan Rus', the Pechenegs and, the Seljuq Turks. During his reign, the Roman Empire largely retained the borders established after the conquests of Basil II, although it did expand slightly eastwards with the annexation of the wealthy Armenian kingdom of Ani. Constantine IX is considered to be the last effective emperor of the Macedonian Renaissance. In 1054 CE, a year before Constantine's death, the Great Schism between the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches took place, culminating in Pope Leo IX excommunicating the Patriarch Michael Keroularios. Continuing a long tradition of imperial arbitration stretching back to Constantine IX's namesake, the emperor, aware of the political and religious consequences of such a disunion, tried unsuccessfully to prevent this breach.
