Requisition for CS Brands and Munitions – Signed by Col. Alfred M. Hobby

Description: Requisition for CS Brands and Munitions – Signed by Col. Alfred M. Hobby Offered for your consideration is a partly-printed quartermaster voucher charging the Confederate government for two copper brands and nineteen canisters for grapeshot. The document is headlined “The Confederate States” and is addressed “To George Pfeuffer, Dr.”. According to the document, the charges were for purchases made in “1863”, on “July 6” and “Oct 10”, the earliest being “For two Copper brands CS at 25. ea 50.00”, while the later was “ “ 19 canisters for grapeshot @ $3. ea 57.00”, for a total of “$107.00”. A manuscript notation, penned in a different hand instructs “The A Qtr M will pay the / above a/c”, followed by the signature of “A M Hobby / Col &c”. Below this is printed “I CERTIFY, on honor, that the above account is correct and just, and that the services were rendered as stated and that they were necessary for the public service.”, with this statement guaranteed by the signature of “D R Gambel” in his capacity as “Ordnance Sergeant” (a blank line for the signature of the “Ass’t Quartermaster, C. S. P. A.” [Confederate States Provisional Army] appears below). An additional statement, concluding this document, reads “RECEIVED at Corpus Christi, Texas, this _______ day of ________ 1863, of Capt. H. A. GILPIN, Ass’t Quartermaster C. S. P. A., one hundred and Seven dollars and no cents, in full of the above account.”, followed by the signature of “George Pfeuffer”. A small, manuscript “No. 64” appears at the lower left, while the back features several pre-printed spaces for a recapitulation of the information, none of which is accomplished on this piece (there is, however, a manuscript number penned below). This document is printed in black printer’s ink on blue-lined blue paper, with the manuscript additions accomplished in period iron gall ink. This unusual and historic document should elicit great interest among Trans-Mississippi autograph and document collectors. Two historic autographs and interesting content. If you are looking for something special to add to your collection, this is the piece. Alfred Marmaduke Hobby was born in 1836 in Macon, Georgia, though by the 1850’s he was living in Florida with his widowed mother and brothers. They subsequently moved to Texas, with Hobby entering a mercantile partnership and establishing a general store in St. Mary’s of Aransas in Refugio County. In 1859, with the resignation of Henry L. Kinney, Hobby was elected to the House of Representatives of the Eighth Texas Legislature, though he was only about 22 years old at the time. He attended the Secession Convention, where he voted to leave the Union, and was elected to the Ninth Texas Legislature, though he subsequently resigned to enter the military. In May, 1862, Hobby assisted in the organization of the 8th Texas Infantry Battalion, of which he was elected major. The following year, this unit was consolidated with several others to form the 8th Texas Infantry Regiment, with Hobby serving as its colonel. He commanded the Confederate forces at the battle of Corpus Christi, which led to the defeat of a Union force attempting to invade the area. During the war, Hobby penned several patriotic poems, including The Sentinel’s Dream of Home, which was published in numerous newspapers across the South. After the war, he continued his literary career, as well as re-entering the mercantile business in Galveston. Alfred M. Hobby spent his final years in Silver City, New Mexico, where he had a wagon accident and died on February 5, 1881. He was subsequently buried in Georgetown Cemetery in Silver City, New Mexico. George Pfeuffer was born in Obernbriet, Bavaria, on October 17, 1830. The family arrived in Galveston, Texas, on November 25, 1845, and set out for Indianola. During that move, most of their belongings were lost in a shipwreck, forcing the family to start from nothing in the New World. Pfeuffer became a clerk in a store in New Branfels, though the following year (1846) he moved to Corpus Christi and became a bookkeeper. He was elected to the Corpus Christi city council in 1852 and married in 1855. Pfeuffer moved with his family to New Branfels in 1861 and joined the firm of William Mann and Company. Losing heavily during the war, Pfeuffer sold his interest in the company to organize George Pfeuffer and Brothers, which engaged in sawmill operations, woolen manufacture, and flour milling. In 1877 he was appointed Comal County judge to fill an unexpired term, and was subsequently elected to the same office in 1880. At the same time, Governor O. M. Roberts appointed him director of Texas A & M, and as president of the board of directors he led the fight to secure state funds. He served as a senator in the state legislature from 1882-1884. George Pfeuffer died of apoplexy on September 15, 1886, in Austin, Texas, and was buried in Comal Cemetery in New Branfels. The presently offered document exhibits signs of significant period use, as well as years of less than ideal long-term storage. Toning is present across the entire surface, imparting to the paper a somewhat dull appearance. Significant staining can be seen at the edges and along the center fold, with moderate soiling noted at the edges as well. As previously mentioned, one hard horizontal fold is present, as are several smaller ones at the corners. The center fold has caused weakening of the paper along its length, with minor loss where it meets the edges. The edges are ragged and wrinkled, with minor paper loss noted (no text is affected). The lower right corner exhibits a significant curl when not in a sleeve, though this is hardly noticeable when protected for display. Four holes can be seen near the top, perhaps associated with some type of binding system. The contrast is significantly below average, with fading to most of the manuscript material (all of it is visible with diligence, however). Measuring approximately 6⅛ x 7¾ inches, this unusual document would make a great addition to any Texas or Trans-Mississippi Civil War collection. Would frame nicely with period illustrations of the principal signers or of Corpus Christi during the war. Any additional questions regarding condition should be addressed before purchasing.
