Description: It's indisputable: Limoges says quality. And this beautiful red and cream 7 3/8 inch plate is the perfect evidence of that. Maker and age: Although no mark appears on the plate, it is part of a distinctive Limoges china service in which other pieces are marked with one of the earliest known factory backstamps of the A. Klingenberg company, which produced excellent porcelain wares in Limoges from its inception in the 1880s until it closed in 1910. The mark was in use from the 1880s until 1890, making the dinner service at least 129 years old and perhaps older. Source: Third Edition of the Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain by Mary Frank Gaston. In that era it was often the case that not all pieces of a dinner service were marked because it was assumed that the service would remain together forever. Other pieces from the service and with the Klingenberg mark are being sold in separate auctions. A photo of the cup's mark is included here for reference only. The cup is not included in this auction. Design: The plate has an intricate design of pink and gold raised flowers and leaves against a cream colored background of thin, translucent porcelain, in keeping with the exceptional quality that made the company's porcelain so famous - and so coveted. Condition: The plate is in excellent condition, especially considering its age and fragile material. There are no nicks, chips, scratches, cracks, stains, repairs, crazing or discoloration. Please check all the photos very carefully - they are an important part of the description.
