Description: This chock-full scrapbook belonged to Seaman Eugene Holmes from Montgomery, Missouri, who was assigned to a six-inch gun crew aboard the cruiser. The flyleaf is dated May 1, 1908, but the earliest dated item we can find in the book is 1911. There is significant coverage of the sinking and eventual salvage of the submarine F-4 off Honolulu in 1915—the Navy’s first submarine loss. Maryland played a large role in that operation. Much of the ship’s time from 1912 to 1914 was spent in Central America: there is material from Nicaragua, Guatemala, Panama and Mexico. There are no actual photos, but we will include a contemporary print of a photo of the ship. There are several contemporary newspaper articles, plus illustrated features from Navy magazines of that era. While thick with its many pages, the album itself is small by scrapbook standards; it measures 7.5 x 9 inches, and is in good condition for its age. The book’s contents do not follow any chronological order, suggesting they were collected, then put in the book at a later date. From correspondence and pieces of envelopes within the book, we are guessing that he mailed much of this material home to his sister in Missouri, who put the scrapbook together. In addition to the news articles, items of interest include numerous invitations to ship social events; movie and entertainment schedules; programs from several theaters, especially in San Diego; a 1914 ticket to a game between the USS Maryland football team and a local Oakland squad; and a ticket to a 1914 North Island (San Diego) picnic in November 1912. There is a rare ticket from Panama to La Boca on the Panama Railroad, which may well be 1912, which was the railroad’s first year of operation. Worthy of more research! There is also an impressive foldout railroad ticket from the San Francisco 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition: “Around the globe from the fair at Golden Gate through the Sierras across Great Salt Lake over the Rockies to the ‘Father of Waters’ in the Hot Springs State.” There is a gun instruction card for the 6 inch gun, several YMCA documents, and ephemera from a trip to Salt Lake City. The brown rectangles that can be seen on several pages comes from old news clippings on opposite pages. About four pages have been removed from this book, and there are a couple of other empty pages where something was taken out. They represent only a tiny fraction of the material still in this scrapbook, however. NOTE: Because 100% of the proceeds are going to a non-profit cause, no returns are accepted other than as provided in the eBay user agreement. *************USS Maryland (ACR-8/CA-8), also referred to as "Armored Cruiser No. 8", was a Pennsylvania-class armored cruiser. Her keel was laid down in 1901; she was launched in 1903; and commissioned on 18 April 1905. Originally based in Newport with the Atlantic Fleet, she spent a year on the Asiatic Station. She then returned to San Francisco in 1907 and for the next decade she made numerous training cruises to Hawaii and the South-Central Pacific. Maryland participated in survey missions to Alaska (1912 and 1913); and carried Secretary of State Knox to Tokyo for the funeral of Emperor Meiji Tenno in September 1912. She steamed off the Central American coast and protected Americans endangered by political turmoil in Mexico and Nicaragua (1913, 1914, and 1916). The ship's name was changed to Frederick in November 1916, freeing the name Maryland for assignment to a new battleship.
