A whimsical, framed original drawing by Ralph Steadman, rendered in vibrant ink. The art is signed and dated by Steadman along the bottom as “Ralph Steadman 2006″. This fantastic piece, drawn on the title page of a book titled "No Room To Swing A Cat", showcases a caricature of a cat using Steadman’s iconic vibrant ink technique shown as the head of a cat with a long ink line arc. The miffed cat is drawn with full front and side whiskers and appears entirely annoyed. The size of the artwork by sight is 8.5″ x 7.5″ and was custom matted, framed and glazed, presented in a gloss black frame, with a hint of red flecks. The completed frame size is 18″ x 17″. A fantastic showcase of Steadman’s renowned artistic style, this piece was originally located on the title page from one of his illustrated books ‘No Room to Swing a Cat’ (one can spot the title vignette, with the original black ink drawing surrounding it). Has a fantastic presentation on the wall. Steadman is renowned for his political and social caricatures, original art by him is quite scarce.CONDITION: Both the art and the frame are in fine condition.Ralph Steadman was thrown into the spotlight during his artistic period with Hunter S. Thompson when he collaborated on the birth of GONZO journalism with his classic black humor illustrations for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and the Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved. His work appeared in countless publications, among them The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Independent, The Guardian, and The Observer. He illustrated a number of literary classics, notably Alice in Wonderland, Animal Farm, Treasure Island, and Fahrenheit 451. He created the art for Flying Dog Brewery (Maryland) and cover art for records by musicians such as the Who (1967), Frank Zappa (1997), and Slash (2010). He also wrote a libretto for British composer Richard Harvey’s eco-oratorio, Plague and the Moonflower (1989), which was performed in a number of cathedrals in England.
