Description: Check out my other garden delights! Apiarists, homesteaders, and gardeners will definitely find something of interest! Taxonomic Information: Genus: Hibiscus Species: syriacus Synonyms: Althaea frutex, Hibiscus rhombifolius, Ketmia syriaca, Ketmia syrorum Common Names: Shrub Althea, Rose of Sharon, Woody Hibiscus, Korean Rose, Syrian Ketmia, Rose Mallow Description: Hibiscus syriacus is a hardy deciduous shrub. It is upright and vase-shaped, reaching 2 to 4m (7 to 13 ft) in height, bearing large trumpet-shaped flowers with prominent yellow-tipped white stamens. The flowers are often pink in color, but can also be dark pink (almost purple). Numerous buds produced on the shrub's new growth provide prolific flowering over a long summer blooming period. The soil in which the Hibiscus thrives on is a moist, but well-drained, mixture of sand, clay, chalk, and loam. Hibiscus syriacus is highly tolerant of air pollution, heat, humidity, poor soil and drought. Shoots make interesting indoor vase cuttings, as they stay green for a long time and the buds continue to open. This species is one of the easiest flowers to grow. It is hot and cold hardy. It can tolerate drought, flooding, shade, and direct sunlight. I like it because it is beautiful as a cut flower in arrangements, and it is great for "low maintenance" areas! It is easy to prune it to your desired size and shape. A+ plant! Apart from being beautiful and care-free, the plant has other advantages: it's edible! The leaves and petals are traditional fare for teas. The petals and leaves, especially the young leaves, are fine greens for use in smoothies, salads, and omelettes! Be sure to check out my other items, including the white althea cuttings! You may notice bananas in the background of my pictures -I sell cold hardy bananas too! What is Included: 12 Healthy cuttings (extras are always included!*I will leave any leaves on the cuttings, unless you specifically request that I remove them. I won't mind -they make a lovely tea! The leaves may appear wilted when they arrive, but it is no reflection of the state of the cuttings. I cut & ship within 1 hour of each other, and I personally deliver the cuttings directly to the post office. I have zero rooting complaints and many repeat orders.* Planting Instructions: Prepare your growing media. Experts recommend a soil-less mix. You can buy ready-made mixes or make your own using perlite and peat moss. We have also used Miracle-Gro potting mix. We have also used pine bark "finings" (fine pine bark mulch) and perlite. Moisten your media all the way through. Poke pencil-sized holes for your cuttings. Experts recommend a light IBA rooting solution for maximum root development and speed. Some people take the rooting preparation further by scraping 1cm or half an inch of the outer layer of the bark from the bottom of the cutting). If you are using the rooting solution, dip the bottom (angled end) of the cutting in your rooting solution. Plant the cutting (angled end down!) in your planting media. Keep warm and moist (but not soaking) in a protected area with at least a little bit of air circulation. I do not recommend keeping them in direct sunlight. Roots should develop within 5 weeks. Having said all of that, many people just put the cuttings directly in prepared soil outdoors in the spring or summer -dappled or indirect sun only, unless it is direct sunlight during the cool morning hours. Please do not let them roast in direct afternoon sun in warm climates. I have rooted them in a glass of rain water as well with great results.
