Description: Personal Memoirs Of U.S. Grant, 2 Volume Set Dated: 1885/1886 Numbered: 12369/21482 Set Includes: 2 Volume Set Description: Faced with failing health and financial ruin, the Civil War's greatest general and former president wrote his personal memoirs to secure his family's future - and won himself a unique place in American letters. Devoted almost entirely to his life as a soldier, Grant's Memoirs traces the trajectory of his extraordinary career - from West Point cadet to general-in-chief of all Union armies. For their directness and clarity, his writings on war are without rival in American literature, and his autobiography deserves a place among the very best in the genre. Each of the volumes contains an extensive table of contents and maps and illustrations. Known as the "savior of the Union" during the Civil War, General Grant went on to serve as the 18th president of the United States from 1869-1877. Condition: This 2 volume set is in fair, used condition but does have some damage. Be sure to read the specific damage listed below. I purchased this set from the Bellwood Antis Public Library in Pennsylvania as they were making room for new books. This set has been stored on shelving for some time. You will find a library card on the last page of each book. The library card is first dated March 7/Feb 29 thru May 2005. This set is signed in ink by D B Mackey on the front, inside cover. Both volumes are numbered 12369/21482 on the 6th page. The gilt to front & back cover medallion are in excellent condition. They are bright in gold color, along with the writing. You can see wherever books were slid in/out from the shelving but the color is still bright. Both volumes show wear to cloth typical of books this old, with smudges, frayed edges and bumped corners. I will picture each book (front/back/spine/fore edge) specifically for your review. Specific Damage Description: The textblock with signatures are unsecure but in place for volume 1. The front cover is loose but still attached. You have to be careful when handling book. This will need repaired but will not stop you from reading the book in its entirety. Page #131 & 169 are ripped at the corner. Pages are still intact. Pull out & maps complete. The headband in Volume II of my set is damaged. The spine cover is detached. This will need repaired or you must handle with great care. The book textblock with signatures are unsecure but in place. The front cover us hanging on by a thread. I will be sure to picture for your review. The pullout after page #495 is damaged. Page #497 and a few pages after are minimally soiled from the damage from the pullout. There are pages that have tears in them but nothing major. Mostly from turning the page.
