Description: This soilless coir-based mix/growing media is specifically designed for potted palms after years of growing them, researching them, and buying and tweaking different mixes. This product has an ideal mixture of fluff (supporting fine feeder root production), grit (replicating the sandy desert and/or coastal conditions of many palm species), water retention (to support palms' high water needs during the growing season), and drainage (to prevent potential root rot). Remember that young palms, especially Washingtonias and Queens, can grow and develop rapidly, benefitting from frequent container upsizing, multiple heavy waterings per week during the growing season (daily watering is recommended for most potted palms in temperatures over 80ºF/27ºC), and a yearly dose of slow release foliage or palm oriented slow release fertilizer in the spring or a once per week (or every other week) dose of all-purpose or palm specific water soluble fertilizer (especially since this mix is coir-based and therefore nutritionally neutral). Always pot your palms with the soil level 1/3" to 1/2" above the base of the trunk (after soil is tamped down and watered) to promote root and trunk development and to prevent air girdling (stunting of growth and development that comes from exposed roots). This mix's fast draining qualities make it ideal for houseplant palms, but watering frequency should still be tweaked for indoor conditions.
