Description: Here we have a stunning, very early antique aesthetic-movement oblong tureen underplate (doubles as a serving platter) from Ott & Brewer (Trenton, New Jersey, USA.) Dates to the earliest years of the Ott & Brewer pottery firm, circa 1864, the Civil War era, in the pre-American Beleek years. Red or Reddish-Brown transferware. Very rare piece from an unknown aesthetic pattern split between a pastoral scene and a stylized floral vine, the two separated by several zig-zag stylized geometric bands that come together a flourish surrounding an urn. The pastoral features a barefooted shepherdess with sheep at her feet, resting underneath an outcrop under birch trees. On back, the impressed, colorless "O & B" mark also reads, "Opaque Warranted China." We have lots of beautiful transferware platters in our store, to which we add new inventory daily, and we're always happy to combine shipping at actual cost. If the eBay checkout fails to properly combine your orders, we will issue a refund for the difference between what you paid to ship items separately and the actual cost of the combined shipping, on the day that we ship your package. (We don't find out the actual cost of combined shipping until we purchase the shipping label.) Approximate measurements: 13.75" x 11" Condition: Our photographs reveal the condition best -- please enlarge and zoom in on them, and examine them carefully. Very fresh and clean piece, in remarkable condition for its age. The only chip is to the foot on the back; piece is otherwise free of chips as well as cracks. Very fine crazing throughout, free of staining. Scattered completely colorless scratches to the surface, with a few affecting the central transfer, but most of the kind that can be seen only when the piece is held up, at just the right angle, to a bright source of light. No gray/silver utensil marks or any other marks or stains noted on the front. Only a few scattered patches of gold remain on the rim. Overall, a very pretty, heavy-duty piece with a long life ahead of it, for display or practical use.
