Note it is sometimes misspelled as Orthocera, Orthocerus or Orthoceros. Many other very similar species are included under the genus Michelinoceras. Orthoceras fossils are the remains of an invertebrate, no backbone, that belongs to the Phylum Mollusca. Some examples of Orthoceras fossils animals are snails, slugs, oysters, clams, octopus, and squid. Originally Orthoceras referred to all nautiloids with a straight-shell, called an orthocone.
