After the last samurai were forbidden to carry swords in public, many blacksmiths started to make knives. Higonokami was then an honorary title for especially powerful samurai, and it quickly became the name for the knives produced there. Since then the construction of the classic HIGO has hardly changed. The handle is usually made of one piece of folded metal and the knife is opened by a lever (chikiri) on the back of the blade. By pressing the lever while holding the knife, the blade is kept open. While there were once 40 members in the blacksmith guild making genuine Higonokami knives, today there is only one maker left making these knives by hand in Miki, Japan. 株式会社 永尾かね駒制作所 Nagao Kanekoma Factory Co., Ltd. is the last and only true Higonokami manufacturer. Handcrafted by fifth-generation blacksmith 永尾光雄 Mitsuo Nagao, this lightweight knife is known worldwide for it's simple, slim, and durable design.
