Description: NAPOLEON 1, AS EMPEROR OF FRANCE, AGREES WITH HIS MINISTER OF WAR ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF TROOPS DURING THE PENINSULAR WARSNAPOLEON BONAPARTE (1769-1821) LETTER SIGNED, “Np”, one page, 7.25 x 9, January 26, 1808. Letter to his Minister of War, Henri-Jacques-Guillaume Clarke, concerning the transfer of troops. In part, translated: “General Clarke, I agree with this distribution of four thousand men and join them as soon as possible.” In fine condition, with fold lines, and small chips on lower left edge.This letter was written at the advent of the Peninsular War following the invasion and occupation of Portugal (19-30 November 1807), when French troops started occupying strategically important locations in Spain. The troop transfer could also be in connection with the occupation of the Papal States on February 2, 1808.Henri-Jacques-Guillaume Clarke, 1st Count of Hunebourg, 1st Duke of Feltre (1765-1818) was a French general and politician who made a career in the Revolutionary Army and under Napoleon. In 1807 he was appointed by Napoleon as Minister of War, a difficult office that he administered with skill, but with a level of personal ambition that raised Napoleon’s suspicion years later. His opportunism became most evident at Napoleon’s fall in 1814, when General Clarke voted to depose the emperor and was appointed Peer of France by Louis XVIII in return.
