Description: Myrmecodia platytyrea - Medium - ***heat pack recommended in winter; purchase separately*** This strange plant from the tropics is native to Northern Queensland Australia, with some plants being found farther north in Indonesia. It develops a very spiny caudex that can morph and grow in various forms depending on pot size and light exposure, topped with strappy green leaves that grow thicker in higher light exposure. It is a Hydnophytine, and it’s also a Myrmecophyte, which means in nature it has a mutualistic relationship with ants. It produces little white tubular flowers, and if pollinated, produces orange seed pods containing easy-to-germinate seeds! You'll receive one of the 2-3" rooted plants in the first six photos, bare-root, without soil or pot. If the moss does not easily come off, the plant will be shipped with some moss attached. The other photos are of my parent plant, from which this seedling was grown, and a few of the older seedlings. For best growth Soil/Medium: long-strand sphagnum mossLight: shade to part sun, morning sun with afternoon shadeWater: keep the medium moist, but not soggy; can lightly dry between waterings This caudiciform is truly tropical and can not withstand temperatures much below 50F. It will grow more compact and dense if exposed to higher levels of light and heat. It can be grown in an orchid pot, mounted on wood, or in a hanging basket, just ensure a light, airy medium and avoid overwatering, especially in cooler temperatures. If the temperature and humidity are not relatively stable the plant can develop corking or light marks on the leaves that sometimes look like a pest. If this happens, do not try to scrape them off because you will damage the leaves. Just let the plant do what it naturally does! *Shipped USPS Ground Advantage, on Mondays, excluding holidays.*Usually arrives in 3-5 business days from shipment date, depending on destination.*Combined shipping is available, contact me with your request before purchasing.*No phytosanitary certificates or other documentation will be provided.
