Though he performed a raucous and energetic live electric set for a house full of blues enthusiasts on this night, Waters also had a quiet, near spiritual side that could surface during any given performance. This image of Muddy (born McKinley Morganfield) captures the introspective beauty that Waters brought to the blues. Taken not long after Waters began to enjoy a resurgence in popularity, via his performance in The Band's The Last Waltz, his collaborations with Johnny Winter (who signed Muddy to his own Blue Sky label), and a sixth Grammy win for his next-to-last album, Muddy 'Mississippi' Waters Live. This 1980 performance is from Waters' final years on the road, though he would still perform the occasional show.
