Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) MANCHESTER TOWN HALL. It is needless to mention in any detail the prominence of Manchester as a centre of English life, as well as of its cotton manufactures. At the great Anti-Corn-Law meeting of 1845, £64,000 was subscribed in a few hours. It is now the seat of a bishopric, the cathedral being a fine Perpendicular structure of the fifteenth century, and is distinguished by many magnificent public buildings, amongst which the noble pile belonging to Owens College must at least be mentioned. We select specially for illustration the magnificent Town Hall, which cost about a million, and was nine years in building. It is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture, from designs by Mr. Alfred Waterhouse. It is crowned by a lofty clock-tower with four dials and twenty chiming bells. In front is the memorial to the late Prince Consort.
