This featured miniature specimen is unlike any other Smithsonites and here are its unique characteristics: 1. It is from a locale in Mexico - Sierra Mojada, Coahuila - that produces unique forms of Smithsonite crystals. Such crystals are translucent but lustrous, with an iridescent satin luster. 2. The color is gorgeous. The luster is shimmering and pearly, and the color is a beautiful blue-green, more like pastel sea-foam green. This light iridescence displays a lustrous rainbow-like play of colors, truly amazing. Under light and at certain angles, the play of colors and the luster is just breath-taking. It is best seen in person as they can be difficult to capture in its entirety on camera. 3. Formation habit is unique. It displays botryoidal-like forms, but also occurs as lenticular lumps or nodules, that have a flattened, lens-like shape. Specimen Background information: Smithsonite is composed of zinc carbonate, usually with some iron, magnesium, and calcium, occasionally with some cadmium, copper, and cobalt. These elements are responsible for the color variations. Smithsonite occurs in a wide variation of colors. For example, copper often causes green or bright blue colors, and cobalt causes a pink to purple color as with this featured specimen. Cadmium makes Smithsonite yellow, and iron gives it a brown to reddish-brown color. Other colors of Smithsonite include yellow-green, orange-yellow, gray, white and even colorless. They generally occur in globular or botryoidal-like forms, which is the case of this featured specimen. Many of the rounded forms have a very distinct feathery or sparkling light effect. Smithsonite belongs to the calcite group of minerals, a group of related carbonates that are isomorphous with one another.
