The legacy of Roswell Garst can be read in the Garst Seed Company signs that mark the cornfields of the Midwest. Founder of whaat has become one of the world’s most progressive hybrid corn companies, Garst is also remembered as the man Khrushchev visited in 1959. Khrushchev’s visit to Coon Rapids, Iowa, stirred the imagination of Americans and furthered a series of interchanges between farms of mid-America and those of the Eastern bloc nations. Prior to Khrushchev’s visit and in the years following, Garst made many rips to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union and engaged in extensive correspondence pertaining t the improvements of agricultural techniques. Described by Silvio Brucan, a farmer Rumanian diplomat, as “one of the most important figures in the establishment of East-West relations.”
