The books at hand, the circumstance, the very quality of the fire and fireplace made something of a special peace for me, and a good beginning for a new year. I hope I may sit by your fire that way again. With great good wishes, Nicholas Vachel Lindsay." An inscription by Wakefield reads: "Dear Dr. Nelson: These were written while Lindsay & I were together -- and were dear to me. Wakefield." Nicholas Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) was an Illinois-born poet who sought to revive the oratorical roots of poetry. Before embarking on his life as a bard, reciting his poems in exchange for room and board, Lindsay attended Hiram College for three years, where he met his future brother-in-law, Paul Wakefield. Lindsay's most acclaimed poem "General William Booth Enters into Heaven" (1913), contained here, is a dramatic musical poem about the founder of the Salvation Army. His work is replete with rhythmic refrains, imagery, and deeply patriotic. During his travels, he met Langston Hughes and promoted his work. Falling into depression later in life, he committed suicide by drinking lye. Arthur Paul Wakefield (1878-1941), married Vachel Lindsay's sister, Olive, Catharine Lindsay, in 1904. They were both missionaries in China, stationed first in Nanking, "under the Foreign Missionary Society of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) from 1905 to 1912 and later serving in Luchowfu until 1919 and in Wuchang under the Episcopal American Church Mission from 1919-1927. He was decorated by the Chinese Red Cross for his services during flood relief and dike reconstruction work along the Yangtze River" (Find a Grave).
