Lewisia cotyledon Sunset Strain is an evergreen perennial/alpine rock garden in the Montiaceae family. Its native range is from southwest Oregon to northwest California. Familiar names include Cliff Maids, Siskiyou Lewisia, and Siskiyou Bitterroot 'Sunset Strain'. It grows naturally in rocky subalpine mountainous habitats. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It is hardy to 14F and prefers acidic to neutral soils. It can grow to around a foot tall at the top of the flowers from a taproot and caudex unit. The leaves are spoon-shaped, about 4 inches long. They are thick leaves from a basal rosette. The flowers bloom from spring through summer, with up to 50 flowers perched on an inflorescence reaching 4-12 inches tall. The flowers are relatively small with several colors: white, pink, yellow, orange, and salmon. The petals have dark veining with 7-13 on each flower. An excellent cut flower for your vase. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 6-8 Germination Sow seeds in a pot, and cover very lightly with vermiculite and grit. Place in a shady position, and cover with an upturned pot or tray. Germination can be fast in ideal conditions (within 14 days) but usually takes about a month.
