Description: Not something you're likely to see here or anywhere else, on a regular basis. I can only tell you the statue's history as it was relayed to me thirty-eight years ago. I bought this item from an upmarket antique store in Sydney Australia back in 1986, midway through the forty-three years we lived there. It had just been put up for sale hours earlier and was attracting much attention even at that stage. The owner explained to me that it's less-than-pristine appearance was of little surprise, given that it had been rescued from a small Mexican village whose church had been ransacked and set alight. The statue was retrieved while the church was still burning allegedly. It was one of a pair, he told me - the other having been sold weeks earlier. This one had only literally just arrived in Australia. My (then) wife was a staunch Catholic and begged me to buy the statue. It cost $950 which in 2024 equates to $3138 apparently - and that of course was its worth thirty-eight years ago in today's currency. A figure of $5000+ in October 2024, would probably be more in keeping with current values. Thus you can see $3600 is very much on the low side. It is very heavy, being 52 inches tall, 15 inches at its widest point and 83.1 lbs.in weight. It was the antique store manager's opinion the statue dated back to the late 1700's. I would like it to pass now to a new owner who finds 83.1 lbs easier to move around than I do in my late seventies.
