Description: La Playa Sextet Exciting New La Playa Sound LP 1st Press Chocolate Armenteros Latin Jazz Archival Sleeve Excellent Dance record Some of the Latin music "Who's Who" greats of all-time are here: Barry Rogers, Vitin Aviles, Chocolate, Victor Paz, and others. The band was formed in February 1947, New York, NY, United States.Members have been Paul "Payo" Alicea (founder, guitar, bass, percussionist), Marie Alicea (vocals), Paul Alicea (timbales), Frank Sanchez (guitar), Ray Mantilla (percussion)They are also known as Sexteto La Playa, The La Playa Sextet, The La Playa Orchestra. The "exciting new sound" of the Sextet is provided by another six stars usually associated with Eddie Palmieri, plus the production of Leroy Holmes. With Vitin Aviles singing it does sound half like the Palmieri and Tito Rodriguez efforts on United Artists, and half like the old La Playa albums. The variety of rhythms, as well as old and new material, seems intended to please all; it does succeed as a latter day overview of early 1960s Latin.
