Description: Empty Collectible Can. KRUEGER BEER 12OZ. ZIP TOP BEER CAN. First brewed in 1858 in Newark, New Jersey. It was closed in 1961 and the label was sold to Narragansett. The attempted to brew the same recipe in Cranston and ship their beer back to Jersey but were unsuccessful and the beer soon disappeared. It was the first beer to be put in cans in America. This can contains no beer. It is about 60 years old. It has some rust and humidity spots, but no scratches, fading or loss of paint. One sided logo. Top is clean with tab removed. Bottom has rust as seen. Zippys were only around for a few years (1962-1965). Pull tabs came mandatory after that. This can is a piece of history and a special time for beer cans and collectors. No more church key can openers needed. Not the best condition but easily not the worst. Nice collectible can. Message me for any special requests. Can has been turned and rotated so that all sides are pictured. Please look carefully at the photos. This is the actual can you receive. Empty collectible beer can. Additional cans ship cheap or free. If the item has noticeable flaws, it will be mentioned in description. Please ask any questions you may have before purchase. I usually respond quite fast. I will combine shipping on multiple purchases to save you money. USA buyers only please. Always leave great feedback or contact me first. I will do everything I can to make you happy. The beer can has a birthday: January 24, 1935. On this Thursday, Americans could buy beer in flat top steel cans for the first time, but only in Richmond, Virginia. This was the first market selected by Gottfried Krueger Brewery to try what was at the time a serious gamble. Would consumers want canned beer after years of glass bottles? After more than 25 years of research and testing, brewers (and can companies) would finally have an answer. Turns out, yes, they did. They wanted it badly. Come summer, Krueger needed American Can, the company that perfected the technology, to produce 180,000 cans a day to meet the demand. The heavy cans could only be opened one way: with a church key, a long piece of metal, pointed at one end, that drinkers used to create two holes in the can's top. One was for drinking, the other to allow air to flow. Until the '60s, the flat top can dominated the market. (*November 1933).
