Description: Issued by the moneyer P. Sepullius Macer, this coin is the last of a series of coins issued in 44 BC just before Caesar’s assassination on 15 March. Until now, Roman tradition was not to show the face of a living roman on coins. Caesar broke with tradition and it was the last straw that got him killed. The legend 'DICT PERPETVO' means 'Dictator in Perpetuity' and by these words Caesar was proclaiming himself as ruler of the Roman Empire for life. The veil on his head represents his position as Pontifex Maximus, the highest religious post. For Brutus, Caesar had gone too far and the rest is history.
