Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare March 11th, 1963 playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the MARY RODGERS and MARTIN CHARNIN musical comedy flop "HOT SPOT" at the Shubert Theatre in Philadelphia, Philadelphia. (The show would open April 19th, 1963 at the Majestic Theatre in New York City and close after only 43 performances.) ..... The musical starred JUDY HOLLIDAY (shown in the cover photo) and featured JOSEPH CAMPANELLA, JOSEPH BOVA, HOWARD FREEMAN, ARNY FREEMAN, MARY LOUISE WILSON, BUZZ MILLER, GEORGE FURTH, JAMES CRESSON, CONRAD BAIN, SHEILA SMITH, JACK DABDOUB, JOHN CUNNINGHAM, CHARLES BRASWELL, FRANK BOULEY, DIANE COUPE, MARTY ALLEN and GERALD TEIJELO ..... Side Note: Choreographer ONNA WHITE and Director MORTON DA COSTA removed their names from the show's credits prior to the Broadway opening. Also, STEPHEN SONDHEIM would contribute the lyrics for two songs ("Don't Laugh" and "That's Good - That's Bad") written in the final week of Broadway previews ..... CREDITS: Book by JACK WEINSTOCK and WILLIE GILBERT ("How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying"); Music by MARY RODGERS ("Once Upon a Mattress", "Hot Spot", "The Mad Show", "Working"); Lyrics by MARTIN CHARNIN ("Annie", "I Remember Mama", "Hot Spot", "The First", "Mata Hari", "Zenda", "Two By Two", "La Strada"); Sets and Costumes designed by ROUBEN TER-ARUTUNIAN; Choreography by ONNA WHITE; Directed by MORTON DA COSTA; Produced by ROBERT FRYER and LAWRENCE CARR with JOHN HERMAN ..... DETAILS: The 26 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors and members of the creative team but with the exception of the front cover, no cast photos ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "A Far, Far Better Thing", "From the Red", "This Gallant Girl" and "Over" which were cut out-of-town .....
