Davis Sons, Inc., Zebulon, North Carolina Designed by Elaine Sarao Beemer; photographs by Gus Martin Preface In his short career as an artist, John Derrickson McCurdy stimulated the love and affection and critical admiration of his teachers and colleagues. In discussions of his work, two themes recur. One is his remarkable talent-a steadily improving technical facility coupled with the special philosophical message he imparted through form and content. The second is a sense of loss, the loss of a friend and of an artist who had given clear indication of the quality of work he might have done. It is in recognition of the State's loss of one of its talented young artists that the museum presents this memorial exhibition. The earliest painting exhibited here is 1967 and the latest, 1974. In seven years John McCurdy left a noteworthy body of work, and we are fortunate to be able to show a representative selection from it. This is not the first time McCurdy's work has been on view in the museum, however. During the few years he was exhibiting, his entries were twice selected by juries for the annual North Carolina Artists Exhibitions. It is appropriate that all of these the pair illustrated on the cover, Voracious Vision and Suckling Sight (catalogue numbers 16 and 17) and Ascent from Below (catalogue number 5) - are included in this memorial show. We are most grateful to the artist's parents, Mary and Harold McCurdy, for their help throughout the months of preparation for the exhibition and especially for their eloquent introduction to the catalogue, which gives so much insight into both the person and the artist. The other lenders to the show also have been most cooperative. They seem to have a special feeling for this artist represented in their collections. As one lender, W. Allen Ashby, wrote, they feel "the loss of the world John McCurdy was making through his heart and his hands." We hope to recreate or at least suggest that world through this exhibition. Moussa M.
