Gone were the images of emperors replaced instead with images of Jesus Christ and religious inscriptions called "Christo grams". The reverse side of the coin offered here carries an image of the virgin Mary. These coins represent significant change in the world's religious direction and have become highly collectible. The coin offered is classed as a "K" and has the following characteristics: Attributed to Alexius I (1081-1118).Obv. Christ bust facing, wearing nimbus cross with single pellet in each limb of cross, pallium and colobium, and raising right hand in benediction with book of Gospels in left. IC-XC as usual and border of large pellets.Rv. Three-quarter length figure of Virgin orans (Mary) facing with nimbate and wearing pallium and maphorium. On left side of nimbus is M, to right is Θ (Mother of God ). Border is large pellets.
