Description: Japanese Portable Lacquer Wood Zushi Shrine Carved Giltwood Buddha Antique Description and Item Information Up for sale is this antique Japanese zushi, or portable shrine. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This piece consists of a lacquered wooden box with two doors that open to reveal a removable Amida Buddha statue. The exterior of the box has a black lacquered finish, and there is brass hardware with a latch. Once the doors are opened, the statue is revealed. The statue is carved wood with a gilded and black lacquer finish; the hair of the Amida Buddha is blue, possibly powdered and applied lapis lazuli. The shrine is approximately 10 5/8 inches tall, 4 5/8 inches long, and 3 7/8 inches wide. The statue is approximately 8 inches tall. Unpacked, this item weighs 1 pound 4.5 ounces. This would be a nice addition to a collection of Buddhist religious antiques. Identification This Japanese zushi has no markings. It is believed to be antique, and the exact age is not known. Condition This displays well overall, but it has wear and age marks, as found. One of the doors has a fine crack that is about an inch long. The back of the shrine has a fine split, likely where the wood is joined, which is also about an inch long. The lacquer has minor flaking, wear marks, and fine scratches. The doors are difficult to open, probably due to differential shrinkage in the wood, so care should be used when opening them. The brass hardware is tarnished. Inside the shrine, there is some worn gold paint. The statue has wear to its gilding and the lacquer is dull and worn. The back side of the statue is rough and unfinished-looking where the bare wood is exposed. The blue hair has minor wear. I have not cleaned this item, and it is a bit dusty.
