Description: Up for auction is an original IXL Bowie Knife and Sheath. It was recently discovered in New Orleans. It features a modified spear point blade with nickel silver cross guard and mother-of-pearl scale handles. The overall length of the knife is 11 inches, the blade is 6-3/4". The stamping on the blade is as follows:G. WOSTENHOLM & SON, WASHINGTON WORKS. THE HUNTERS COMPANION.In the ribbon:"THE REAL I*XL" (I EXCEL) Stamped in large letters on the Ricasso is I*XL. The blade is 3/16" thick and is lightly pitted; there is some moderate pitting near the point. The knife appears to have been expertly cleaned. Please see photos for details and more will be taken if needed. The pins for the scale handles are made of nickel silver. There are some light abrasions on the butt and on one of the scales. No cracks are visible on the scale handles. The knife has been used but not abused. The knife's scabbard is in fairly good condition considering its age. The nickel silver sheath and wooden liner are intact. The leather cover is mostly intact with some shrinkage and abrasions. The button is missing from the nickel silver sheath and someone has hand-stitched a belt loop on the back of the scabbard. This is a rare deluxe Bowie by one of the best and oldest makers, in decent condition. This will be shipped in a large size priority box, fully insured.
