Description: This is a Bantam Pathfinder edition, 19th printing (September 1976), of this John Steinbeck novel. There was supposed to be a major motion picture made of this with Ethan Hawke, wasn't there? The book reads as though Gary Cooper should have starred. This copy is worn with age, with creasing and little doggy ears, but clean, with no markings inside or out, and I just read it last year, so I can vouch for it being fully functional. Anyway. In Dubious Battle was published in 1936. The central figure of the story is an activist attempting to organize abused laborers in order to gain fair wages and working conditions. The title is a reference to a passage from John Milton's Paradise Lost: Innumerable force of Spirits armed, That durst dislike his reign, and, me preferring, His utmost power with adverse power opposed In dubious battle on the plains of Heaven And shook his throne. What though the field be lost? All is not lost—the unconquerable will, And study of revenge, immortal hate, And courage never to submit or yield: And what is else not to be overcome?
