The company was founded in 1980 by David Tran, a Vietnamese refugee who named it after the boat he escaped Vietnam on. The rooster symbol in the Sriracha branding is a tribute to Tran's birth year. His journey began with selling hot sauce to Asian restaurants in California, a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and love for spicy flavors. For decades, the company sourced its peppers from Underwood Ranches in Ventura County, California. However, a legal dispute in 2017 ended this relationship. Since then, Huy Fong has sourced peppers from several suppliers in Mexico. Unfortunately, recent drought conditions and supply chain issues have impacted the harvests. In recent years, production has faced challenges. In May 2024, the company halted production until after Labor Day because green chili supplies affected the product's color.
