In the original, this shape was the perfect complement to the snappy driving characteristics of the Apal, which was capable of darting from 0 to 100 km/h in 9 seconds. Naturally, the Apal was powered by a 1,750 cc four-cylinder boxer engine that generated 85 hp. Tipping the scales at merely 630 kilograms of tare weight, it weighed 300 kilograms less than a series-production Beetle. This let the Apal top out at a maximum speed of approx. 150 km/h.
