Bel Ami was launched in 1986. The nose behind this fragrance is Jean-Louis Sieuzac. Top notes are Sage, Bergamot, Cardamom, Lemon and Mandarin Orange; middle notes are Carnation, Patchouli, Cedar, Basil, Orris Root and Jasmine; base notes are Leather, Oakmoss, Styrax, Vetiver, Amber, Vanilla and Coconut. The best perfume storage is completely dark, cool and low humidity. We have had this exact perfume storage; going back to 2015! It is not good for them to be in a retail store environment with fluorescent light! Even sealed in their original boxes, even if the boxes are black most stores DO NOT store their perfume properly. At all. They just hope to sell it within a year. All the pictures are ours and you will receive exactly what you see, though not the one we pictured! Older or Vintage perfumes are often desirable to collectors for few reasons- the first two are the main ones 1: The perfume is discontinued and no longer available. 2: The perfume is still available, but is different from when they were first released (the artist’s pure intention in the fragrance). 3: The perfume ages well, gets better smelling with age. Vintage and antique items by nature have some imperfections and signs of use, age and time. Perfumes over 3-10 years start to lose their freshness and may start to smell like alcohol. Certain ingredients and compounds will break down and "turn" faster than others. For instance, a perfume using a natural ingredient to make the smell orange or bergamot for the opening will fade quicker that one that uses a synthetic ingredient. Natural ingredients were used much more back in the day. The main point is the older the perfume, the less it may smell like what you may remember. This is NOT a defect of the item we are selling. There is NO, I repeat NO possible way for a bottle that has been stored years and years to smell exactly the same as it did years ago. Due to ingredients. Nature. Physics. Organic things and life. The ONLY way for it to smell exactly the same is to go back in time. Please remember that perfumes ALSO, OFTEN; and often more than ONCE, go through reformulations or changing of ingredients. This can be due to rising perfume ingredient costs, regulations (such as IFRA) on allergens or chemical toxicities, company buyouts, corporate greed, and may not smell the same as what you remember. These reformulations are not always disclosed to the public so it is not a record of fact if you will or easy to find info on. That being said many collectors in forums, online groups talk about batch variation and reformulations if you search the perfume name with either of those after it. Packaging and bottle changes are often clues that there has been a reformulation, but not always.
